Coelodonta and Elasmotherium

Description

At the top : Coelodonta antiquitatis, the woolly rhinoceros, one of the most iconic animals of the Pleistocene megafauna. At around two meters tall, 3-4 meters long, and weighting around 2-3 tons, this rhino was comparable in size to the white rhino. It had long brown/blond fur, with a dark body band according to some Chauvet paintings, a large bump above the shoulders, and short limbs and tail. The long, curved anterior horn could reach 60 cm, while the posterior one was shorter, with a more rounded tip. Cave paintings can give an idea about what C. antiquitatis looked like, but we must consider them carefully, as we know Paleolithics could exaggerate some details to give their representation a more symbolic appearance.
At the bottom : Elasmotherium sibiricum, probably the second largest member of the Rhinocerotidae family after Elasmotherium caucasicum, was comparable in size to an elephant. E. sibiricum was around 2,50 meters at the top of the bump, 4,5 meters in length, and around 4 tons in weight. A painting in the Rouffignac cave seems to represent Elasmotherium. A recent discovery in Kazakhstan has revealed that Elasmotherium was still alive 26 000 years ago.

Very nice! Elasmotherium was basically elephant-sized...
